What is Hyrox?

Writing

It’s not every day that you see a new fitness competition burst onto the scene, but that’s exactly what has happened with Hyrox in 2024.

Hyrox has taken the fitness world by storm this year, with an impressive projection of over 260,000 athletes competing across 60 events. There has been substantial social media fanfare around “the marathon of fitness”; TikToks with the hashtag #HyroxLondon garnered millions of views, and household names like Lance Armstrong have participated in events and taken to social media to discuss their experience. The Google trends chart below illustrates the massive increase in awareness, interest, and participation that Hyrox has seen over the past few months.

Is Hyrox just another fitness trend, or is it a global phenomenon reshaping how we approach competitive fitness?

What is Hyrox?

Hyrox is a new fitness race that combines running and functional fitness. It is made up of a series of eight workouts, where each workout consists of:

  1.  a 1km run
  2. a functional workout.

This sequence is repeated 8 times, resulting in a total of 8 km of running and 8 functional workouts. The functional workouts include (in order):

  • 1km SkiErg
  • 50m Sled push
  • 50m Sled pull
  • 80m Burpee broad jumps
  • 1km Rowing
  • 200m Farmer’s Carry
  • 100m Sandbag lunges
  • 100 Wall balls

Unlike its cousin Crossfit, Hyrox races are always the same format and movements, regardless of where or when you compete, which makes it much simpler to track your progress over time. That’s not the only difference between Hyrox & Crossift, though. The Hyrox Founder, Christian Toetzke, said it best:

“CrossFit is the only existing sport that’s based on gym equipment, but it’s fundamentally different (from Hyrox) because CrossFit is not a mass-presentation event. Its main events are where the top athletes in the world come together to do stuff no one else can do, like handstand walks or muscle-ups.  Our workouts are all based on natural movements that anyone can do.”

Toetzke wants Hyrox to be the marathon of fitness; an event that is for everyone, that everyone can complete, and where anyone can complete.

For those looking to diversify their training and experience a new kind of competition, Hyrox offers an exciting alternative. It’s not just about who’s the strongest or the fastest but who can maintain a high level of performance across multiple disciplines. This unique combination is why so many hybrid athletes are flocking to Hyrox events and integrating Hyrox-style workouts into their training regimens.
